Missing teeth can be replaced with a number of treatments, including dentures, implants and bridges.
Tooth loss can occur for a number of reasons, but the good news is that there are a range of treatments designed to restore oral function as well as the aesthetic of one’s smile. Whether you choose to have a dental implant placed or would prefer a bridge or removable dentures, each treatment has its own set of benefits. Read on to find out more about these options and which one is right for you…
How do dental implants work?
Dental implants are an effective option for those who are missing one or multiple teeth. Dental implants are made from biocompatible titanium and are surgically inserted directly into the jawbone. The implant acts like a tooth root and fuses with the jawbone over time. A prosthetic tooth is then mounted onto the implant to provide a natural-looking appearance.
Dental implants are very strong and durable, and with the proper care, should last for decades. They look and feel just like natural teeth and can effectively restore full oral function.

What is a dental bridge?
A dental bridge can be used to replace several missing teeth in one area of the mouth. A fixed bridge works by bridging the gap caused by a missing tooth and involves crowns to fill in the areas left by missing teeth.
Like dental implants, bridges also look and feel just like natural teeth and help restore oral function. The process of having a bridge placed typically takes two to three appointments. Your dentist will take an impression of your mouth so that the bridge can be fabricated. A temporary bridge will be placed until your permanent restoration is ready to be fitted.

How do dentures work?
Dentures are often a good option for patients who are looking for an affordable solution to missing teeth. Complete dentures may be recommended if you are missing all of the teeth on the top or bottom arch, while partial dentures are an option for those with some remaining teeth.
It usually takes between six and eight weeks to complete the denture development process. Your dentist will take a series of impressions of your jaw before making a model for you to try. When you are happy with the fit, colour and shape of the model, your final dentures will be fabricated, fitted and adjusted accordingly.
