Recently, the ADA’s Oral Health Tracker data found that 90 percent of Australian adults have some form of tooth decay.
Unfortunately, if tooth decay is not treated, or not treated early enough, you could lose that tooth! If you have one or more missing teeth, you’ve probably already done your research and come across different solutions to fill in these gaps. However, many patients confuse dentures and dental implants; the purpose of these two procedures, and how they differ.
What causes tooth loss?
Some of the most common reasons for tooth loss can include;
- Gum disease – Also known as periodontal disease, is one of the most common causes of tooth loss, accounting for 22 percent of Australians having it.
- Cavities – These are holes in teeth caused by a bacterial infection that turns into tooth decay, unfortunately resulting in tooth loss.
- Physical injury or trauma – For example, if you play a contact or field sport, and do not wear your mouthguard, you may be increasing the risk of losing a tooth from 2-18%!
- Other diseases and risk factors can also cause tooth loss.
What are dental implants?
Dental implants closely resemble natural teeth, as they start with a firm foundation. This is a titanium post inserted into the missing tooth’s socket. This post creates a prosthetic tooth root which bonds with natural bone tissue. On the top of the implant, the team at Beenleigh Marketplace can place a prosthetic tooth that will look, feel, and function just like your natural teeth.
What are dentures?
Dentures are replacements for missing teeth that can be taken out and put back into your mouth.
There are two types of dentures we offer here at Beenleigh Marketplace Dental; full and partial. Our team will help you choose the type of denture that’s best for you based on whether some or all of your teeth are going to be replaced.
Do I need Dental Implants or Dentures?
Dental implants are more often than not a common choice for people who have only one or two teeth missing; however, they can be a suitable alternative to dentures if you have more than two missing teeth. This can be discussed in your initial appointment with Beenleigh Marketplace Dental.
