Which foods are good for your gums?

Good dietary choices can help to maintain healthy gums in the long term.

When it comes to enjoying optimal health, it’s no secret that proper nutrition is vital. And to maintain gum health, there are a few foods that can be extra beneficial. Unfortunately, gum disease is a common issue for many people. If untreated, it can lead to problems, including receding gums, tooth loss, and health conditions affecting other body parts. So, which foods are worth incorporating into your diet to ensure your gums remain healthy?

Why is gum health so important?

In its early stages, gum disease is known as gingivitis. Symptoms associated with this issue include inflamed and tender gums, as well as gums that bleed easily. If left untreated, gingivitis can advance to a more severe form of the disease known as periodontitis. Periodontitis can cause serious problems, such as loose teeth and tooth loss.

Caused by the bacteria in plaque, gum disease is an infection of the gum tissue. The best way to prevent the issue altogether is to practise proper oral hygiene on a daily basis — this includes brushing your teeth at least twice a day, flossing daily, and seeing your dentist for regular check-ups. Sticking to a balanced diet can also help maintain the condition of your gums.

Which foods are good for your gums?

Although there is not much research surrounding which foods specifically benefit gum health, studies suggest that certain nutrients could be good for the gums.

Foods that contain vitamin C, for example, may help to reduce inflammation of the gums. Some good sources of the vitamin include citrus fruits like oranges and grapefruit, berries, and leafy greens. Studies also suggest that vitamin B12 could help maintain healthy gum tissue — this nutrient can be found in eggs, meat, and milk, as well as in bread and cereals that have been specially fortified with the vitamin.

Omega-3 fatty acids also play a vital part in maintaining gum health. These nutrients help to control inflammation in the gum tissues and can be found in oily fish like salmon, sardines, and herring, as well as nuts and seeds like chia and walnuts; and plant oils like flaxseed and canola.

Which foods can harm the gums?

There are plenty of foods that can boost gum health. Unfortunately, there are a few that can cause or exacerbate gum-related issues. Refined carbohydrates like chips, crackers, and white bread contribute to plaque formation. These foods also increase the risk of oral health issues like gum disease. Eating sugary foods often increases the frequency of acid attacks on the enamel of the teeth. It also contributes to the build-up of plaque and tartar.
