Keep your oral health on track this festive season

Don’t forget to take care of your teeth and gums during the holidays.

Many of us are busy in the final weeks of work for 2020, getting ready to take a break from work and our daily routines as the holiday season has arrived. The holiday season is the perfect time to sit back and relax.

However,  it’s important that we don’t forget to practice healthy oral hygiene habits for the sake of our teeth and gums. Not only will this help you maintain a healthy smile, it will also protect your overall health.

Our top oral hygiene tips this holiday season:

Don’t forget your oral hygiene routine

You might be taking a break from your usual day-to-day routines, but it doesn’t mean you can take a break from your oral hygiene routine. Make sure to remember to brush your teeth twice a day, floss daily and rinse your mouth out regularly by drinking water. This is crucial while you’re enjoying all your holiday treats and snacks.

This will help ensure you avoid many nasty issues such as tooth decay, cavities and gum disease.

Don’t skip dental appointments

If you are due for a dental check-up and clean, it’s important that you don’t delay it any more, otherwise you are putting your mouth at risk.

Regular check-ups are key to maintaining good oral health, and we recommend that you come in every six months or so — this allows your dentist to identify any issues at an early stage and provide treatment before problems become more advanced. When you come in for a check-up, your dentist will perform a thorough oral examination looking at the health of your teeth, gum and jawbone.

Your dentist will also perform a professional clean, to remove any built-up tartar (hardened plaque).

Maintain a healthy nutritious diet

While there’s no problem with enjoying an occasional treat over the festive season, it is important to remember that nutrition plays an important part in maintaining good oral and overall health.

Remember if you Indulge in sugary treats between meals, be sure to rinse your mouth with water to flush out any leftover food debris and sugars.

Another great tip is to avoid sticky candies such as toffees and caramel as these tend to stick to the teeth, which allows time for plaque to turn sugars into damaging acids. Further, hard candies can also cause serious damage to the teeth in the form of chips and cracks when you bite down.

Now that we’ve covered the bad treats, how about we discuss what you should be eating this holiday season! To keep a healthy smile and body, it’s important to eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables and drink water throughout the day in order to stay hydrated.

Get the care you need

If you unfortunately suffer from an accident over the festive season that results in a cracked, broken or fallen out tooth, this means you are suffering a dental emergency.

Our team puts time aside each day to help with emergency cases, so don’t delay in getting in touch if you need urgent care. It’s important to know the difference between a dental concern and an emergency — a dental concern is an issue that doesn’t cause pain, while a dental emergency generally causes considerable pain and should be addressed as soon as possible.

One of the most common dental emergencies is tooth loss. If a tooth is knocked out over the festive season, we recommend that you pick it up and avoid touching the roots. Make sur eto rinse it gently with water, and put it in a container with milk before coming in to see your dentist as soon as you can. The sooner you see your dentist, the higher the chance that your tooth may be saved.
